From the Principal

Dear Families,

Welcome Back!

We have had a fantastic start to Term 3!  Over the coming terms, we have committed to working on our Behaviour Support Model for Longford Primary School.  Our overarching focus is on ‘Safety, Kindness and Respect.’

All students have been briefed on our behaviour ‘Non Negotiables.’  These are:

  • We cannot hurt another student physically
  • We cannot hurt another person with our words
  • Swearing will not be tolerated

At Longford Primary school we have High Expectations in regard to behaviour; this starts with RESPECT -  respecting self, respecting others, respecting our school grounds / property and respecting our uniform.

Students have been hearing these messages from myself and classroom teachers since their return to school this term.  We are reinforcing the rules each day as a priority.  Already, we are pleased to observe a decrease in inappropriate behaviours occurring.  Students understand that we will aim to manage challenging situations restoratively, but that there are clear consequences in place for those not managing to follow the ‘non-negotiables.’   We have also started to work with our youngers students on the concept of ‘Kindness’ and the expectation that we use kind actions and words.

Further to this, we now have a staff team working on our behaviour policy to provide clarity and consistency to students and families.  In future newsletters we will offer updates and reminders around this school priority.

As parents and friends of our school learning community we ask for your support in reinforcing these messages with your children and helping everyone uphold these expectations whilst at school.  We are proud of our school and we will continue to focus on the non-negotiables as well as Respect, Safety and Kindness now and into the future.

If you have any questions or concerns in regard to this, please don’t hesitate to chat with me or a member of the leadership team at any time.

Rotary Club of Longford

Rotary.jpgThank you to the Rotary Club of Longford for their very kind donation of $425 towards our school garden. Rotary Club President, Di Barnett, presented a cheque to Cath and Miss Doran. We value the ongoing support from Rotary for our school, thank you!

Canteen Update

We are very excited to announce that JJ’s will be supporting our Prep-6 students with canteen lunches each Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from the 7th of August.  Lunch order forms will be available from the classrooms.  All orders need to be placed in the classroom lunch tubs before 9:15am.  Unfortunately late orders cannot be accepted.

Staff News

We warmly welcome Carla Dinale to Longford Primary School.  Carla will be replacing Hollie as our Speech and Language Pathologist for the remainder of the year.

In other staff news, we would like to formally congratulate Mrs Jenny Bryan on recently winning the Principal position substantively at Waverley Primary School.  Longford Primary School will sincerely miss Mrs Bryan and we once again thank her formally for her amazing contribution to the students, families and staff of our school over many years.  We wish Mrs Bryan all the very best in her role and know that she will be a terrific Principal.

Supervision

A reminder that students should not be on school grounds without a parent or carer prior to 8:30am as there is no supervision of students before this time.  Students should not stay after school unless parents are present.  Please make sure your children are supervised if using school facilities after hours.

A reminder that Kindergarten students need to be collected at 2:30pm.

Road Safety

A note to parents to please remind children about the safety of wearing bike helmets when riding bikes or scooters:

  • Tasmania Bike Laws
Cyclists must wear a helmet at all times, unless you have medical, cultural, or religious reasons not to
Cyclists are allowed to ride on footpaths unless otherwise stated

Tasmania's cycling fines are very high, with fines ranging from $260 to $650 - so you always want to make sure you are riding safely in Tasmania.

School Association

Our next School Association meeting will be held in the Parent Room on Tuesday the 6th of August at 9.15am.  All welcome.

Book Week

The theme of book week this year is ‘Reading is Our Secret Power.’  Our book week parade will happen on Wednesday 21st August.
