Dear Families
Learning
As I move around the school, I continue to be impressed with students’ positive attitude to learning. A highlight over the last few weeks has been watching the Year 1/2 students build on their writing skills by learning new vocabulary and then using these words in their writing. Preps have been working hard to put their knowledge of letters and words together to write simple sentences. In Year 3-6 students have been focusing on developing reading comprehension strategies. We also have many students who have now done more than 50 nights of reading at home. Congratulations to all students on improving their literacy skills.
Cross Country
Last Thursday we held our Year 3-6 Cross Country Carnival at the Longford Skate Park. Students walked down before participating in their events. Student behaviour during the walk and the carnival was outstanding, and it was wonderful to see students cheering each other on and giving their best during their races. Students and house captains displayed strong leadership, which supported the day to be successful and fun. Thank you to Mr Ellis for his organisation of the carnival. Later in the term we look forward to holding a K-2 running event. Details to come soon.
School Focus – Respect
This week students in Year 3-6 will engage in workshops around respect, building positive relationships and bullying. This is part of our focus in building a respectful and positive school culture. Our aim is to continue to reduce incidents of bullying or put down language as well as to equip students with the skills to maintain positive healthy relationships with their peers.
Duty of Care
A reminder that school hours are from 8:30am-2:50pm. This is when the school has duty of care for students. We encourage our families to use our playground and oval after school and on weekends, however we need to ensure that children are safe and school property is respected. If children are on site after school hours they must be with an adult (parent or guardian). Children who are not accompanied by adults will be asked to leave school grounds. If you have any questions regarding children being on school grounds out of hours, please contact the school.

School Attendance Consultation
Share your thoughts on school attendance
Help us better understand any barriers that may be in the way, and what supports are needed to help with getting to school.
The Department for Education, Children and Young People is doing statewide consultation on school attendance. 3P Advisory is independently running the consultation. Your answers are confidential, and you won’t be identified.
We want to hear from you. You can take part in an online survey, share or vote for suggestions, or join an online drop-in session via the 3P website. The survey takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.
You can also share your thoughts about what you like or don’t like about our Every school day matters campaign.
As a parent or carer, please have your say. Please encourage your child/ren, too.
Every piece of feedback counts. Thanks for helping shape future DECYP initiatives, school-based engagement strategies and public awareness campaigns.
We have had reports from Police and the public regarding unsafe crossing of roads and riding of scooters and bikes. There has been several near misses with cars at the Motivity Fitness car park and the roads surrounding the school.
ADULTS PLEASE ENSURE YOUR CHILDREN ARE USING THE ROAD CROSSING AND KNOW GENERAL ROAD SAFETY IF RIDING A SCOOTER OR BIKE. We do not want to have any accidents involving our school community.
Hockey Gala Day and State Athletics
On Friday 10th May our students attended sporting events at St Leonards.
Lilly, Piper, Harriet, Claudette, Ashley, Ella, Malaki, Rhys, Liam, Rhylee, Bibi, Lochie and Lucas competed at the Hockey Gala Day. Well done!
The garden team have been welcoming grade 3 /4 students to sit under Grandma Gum to start their garden class. Grandma Gum stands in the native forest edging the oval and when the class arrives, Eric the Echidna appears from his burrow. He is a puppet who tells stories. Sometimes we snuggle under blankets while we listen to the stories. Last week we learnt about the hidden world of mycelium that Eric found while digging. To find out more, just ask any grade 3 /4 student!
To get our hands learning, we form small groups after the story. Chefs prepare delicious food, Mark and Aidan lead small groups in the dynamics of fire making, student gardeners have created two new tunnel beds in the orchard and, believe it or not, another small group of students has been channelling Eric the Echidna and creating stories of their own. For some, this is the first time they have ever told a story.
Grade 1-2s
Grade 1-2s have recently finished their Scratch Jr. coding projects, with outcomes such as moving to the next 'scene' of our game/story, making characters move when bumped into by other characters and adding dialogue speech bubbles. This week 1-2s are finishing their Hex Bug maze/obstacle courses, working cooperatively in groups, with creations made from cardboard and craft items.
3D Printing
Grade 5-6s are now completing their 3D print designs using Tinkercad. We have added a new available colour for students to utilise, blue. Sandra printed this yellow Star Fruit, and Elinore found a duck on another 3d Printing website.
National Simultaneous Storytime
National Simultaneous Storytime is an annual event that encourages communities, schools and libraries across Australia to read the same book simultaneously. This year the featured book is 'Bowerbird Blues'. Our school had our own 'Bowerbird' read to the whole school!
Download link is below to our updated lunch order list. We will be offering 'specials' every second Thursday (the Thursday that is off Subway Canteen Hub week). Please check on the Qkr! app for the specials to order.

Digital skills are critical to every child’s success, but supporting online learning can be overwhelming.
The Digital skills for families team are delivering a program to help Tasmanian families support online learning at home. Spending time online at home gives children an opportunity to practice what they are learning at school. Positive home environments help children develop the skills and independence they need to succeed in a digital future.
Learn about communicating online with schools, digital education at school and how to support online learning at home.
Digital skills for families is offering free:
- information sessions
- workshops
- one-to-one help
In libraries, schools and community locations statewide.
