Dear Families
Term 1 has certainly been a busy and positive term at Longford Primary School. Students have been involved in many activities and learning opportunities including excursions, Fire Safety lessons, Athletics Carnival and the Reading Challenge. It has been wonderful to see students embracing these opportunities. On behalf of the school, I would like to thank families and the community for your ongoing support of the school and hope that you have an opportunity to have some quality family time over the term break.
Reading
Reading is a school priority at Longford Primary School. As part of our focus on reading we have been running a School Reading Challenge. I am very pleased to see some students have hit a major milestone of 50 nights of reading. That is amazing!! We appreciate the support you are giving your child/children at home with their reading. If you are looking for new reading material the school library has a variety of books. Students can also use the SORA app which is free for all DECYP students. They just need their email and password to log in. You can find more information here.

Respect Focus
As you are aware, we have been having a school wide focus around Respect, particularly respectful language. Students have been learning about respect in classrooms and our social worker Alex spoke to the Year 5/6s around the impact hurtful language can have on others. I am pleased to update you that we are seeing a decrease in our data around incidents of disrespectful language. Next term students will be participating in some workshops and learning sequences around respect and bullying.
Emergency Procedures
Recently staff have worked with the Department in updating our emergency procedures and policies. This week students participated in a lockout drill and over the year students will also practice evacuation and lockdown drills. This helps us be prepared if there is an emergency on site. If you have any questions about the drills or procedures, please contact the office.

Over the last two weeks our students have attended a Home Fire Safety Program. Our school community would like to thank the Tasmania Fire Serivce for providing this service to our school over the last 30 years!
The age appropriate program is designed to raise fire awareness in children and includes fun in class activities, videos, activity books, website www.tfseducation.com.au and giveaways.
Parents and other family members are also encouraged to participate by reading the information and assisting your child with the after school activities.
The TFS aims to deliver appropriate fire safety education to every primary school child in Tasmania and is part of the TFS’s ongoing commitment to create a fire safe Tasmania.
Key Fire Safety Messages include,
Wake up - Install a smoke alarm in every bedroom
Plan and practice a home fire escape plan with the whole family
In a fire crawl low and go, go, go to the nearest exit
In an emergency call triple zero
Keep flammable material at least two metres from the heater
If your clothes catch fire, stop, drop, rock and roll
Keep matches and lighters away from children
Cooking - Turn it off before you turn away
Cool a burn under cool water for at least 20 minutes
Most house fires can be avoided. Make your home fire safe

EARLY CHILDHOOD
TFS believes that parents and caregivers are the best people to make sure that very young children are safe from fire. To help with this, TFS has a fire safety website for parents, carers, teachers and students
TFS has also developed resources for young children that introduce them to the friendly firefighter characters that they will meet when they receive the School Fire Education Program including a colouring book and stickers with home fire safety messages for the whole family.
Free giveaways for your preschool or child care centre are available here.
MakeyMakeys
The 3-4s and 5-6s have continued their experimentation with the new MakeyMakey kits, recently making a game controller for a simple soccer game. Students were able to use fruit, random metal objects, foil, play-doh and each other as 'buttons' for their controller. One 5-6 team managed to figure out an easier way to use their controller by having the 'Earth' cable wrapped around their hand with tin foil.
3D Printing
This term, 3-4 classes have learnt how to use 3D Modelling software Tinkercad to create or find their own 3D models to be able to print. An easy first print to start with is a simple keyring, which also doesn't take as long to print. Most keyrings are printed in about 30 minutes. This year we have extended our colour range for students who can now choose red, yellow, green, black or white filament. 5-6s will be having use of Tinkercad and the 3D printer in Term 2. Here you can see some of our creations this term and some of the Tinkercad design files.
Last Friday the 1/2 classes participated in an excursion to Seahorse World and Platypus House at Beauty Point. Everyone had a great day!
