Dear Families
Respect Focus
This year we are having a school-wide focus on Respect. This aligns with our school priority around Positive School Culture. Some information went home regarding this focus last week. This week our learning around respect is about understanding what respect is and ways we can show respect. We really appreciate the support from families and encourage you to talk with your children around ways they can show respect both at school and at home.
NAPLAN
Students in Years 3 and 5 have now completed their NAPLAN assessments. I have been so impressed with the positive attitude and resilience students have shown during this time. It was evident that all students tried their best. Well done students! Thank you to Mrs Copeland for her coordination of NAPLAN. The information from the assessments will support us as a school to put strategies in place to improve students’ Literacy and Numeracy skills.
Fundraising BBQ
On Saturday the School Association held a fundraising BBQ to raise money for our school garden and Kinder playground. It was lovely to be able to showcase the produce from our garden to the community. This year all students will have the opportunity to take part in school garden lessons and can also use the garden space during break times as part of our wellbeing focus. Our Kinder playground, is in need of an update and we are working with the Early Years Team to develop a plan, to begin some of these updates, this year. We really appreciate the efforts of the parents and community members who gave their time on Saturday to support these very worthy projects. We will be holding another sausage sizzle to raise further funds for the playground before the end of term. Thank you again to our School Association and parent volunteers for their time and commitment to our school. We are always looking for more volunteers for school events. If you have time throughout the year to support and volunteer as part of our Parents and Friends Group we would be really grateful. Please contact the school office if you would like to find out more information.

This year we have donated $2000 to our garden program and $500 towards books for LiL and the Home Reading Challenge. Our future fundraising focus is going towards our Kindergarten playground upgrade.
A reminder to have your Easter raffle tickets returned to the classroom this week. Classroom raffles will be drawn this Thursday.
On the Thursday after Easter, 4th April, we are holding a sausage sizzle for students lunch. If you wish to order for your child, please return the order form (sent home today) to class teachers by Wednesday 3:00pm.
A firefighter from the Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) is visiting our school for the last two weeks of term to present a Home Fire Safety Program to our Prep to Grade 6 students.
Kindergarten students, whilst not receiving a structured lesson, can expect a visit from the firefighter who will leave some free fun activites for the students to complete.
The age appropriate program is designed to raise fire awareness in children and includes fun in class activities, videos, activity books, website www.tfseducation.com.au and giveaways.
Parents and other family members are also encouraged to participate by reading the information and assisting your child with the after school activities.
The TFS aims to deliver appropriate fire safety education to every primary school child in Tasmania and is part of the TFS’s ongoing commitment to create a fire safe Tasmania.
Key Fire Safety Messages include,
Wake up - Install a smoke alarm in every bedroom
Plan and practice a home fire escape plan with the whole family
In a fire crawl low and go, go, go to the nearest exit
In an emergency call triple zero
Keep flammable material at least two metres from the heater
If your clothes catch fire, stop, drop, rock and roll
Keep matches and lighters away from children
Cooking - Turn it off before you turn away
Cool a burn under cool water for at least 20 minutes
Most house fires can be avoided. Make your home fire safe

EARLY CHILDHOOD
TFS receives regular requests from preschools and child care centres asking for firefighters to visit and teach children about home fire safety.
TFS does not deliver structured fire safety programs to children below primary school age. This decision was made based on research carried out by the Mental Health Services of the Royal Children’s Hospital and the Metropolitan Fire Brigade in Melbourne. This research indicated that:
- Children under the age of five had low retention of the information they had learned; and
- In some children, the information had actually stimulated their curiosity about fire and they had begun to play with fire.
TFS believes that parents and caregivers are the best people to make sure that very young children are safe from fire. To help with this, TFS has a fire safety website for parents, carers, teachers and students
TFS has also developed resources for young children that introduce them to the friendly firefighter characters that they will meet when they receive the School Fire Education Program including a colouring book and stickers with home fire safety messages for the whole family.
Free giveaways for your preschool or child care centre are available here.

What is your favourite thing about literacy?
I like learning new descriptive words to put in my stories.
I like both writing and reading. I like to read books like Rabbit Soldier, Angel Thief, Waiting For The Storks, We Are Wolves. I like these because I enjoy books that are set around war or that have wars as a part of their themes.
I really like to write narratives. I like the whole concept of writing a mini story that captures the reader’s attention.
Tell us about this piece of work…
I wrote Strange Little Creatures following some question prompts from Mrs Oates that helped us develop our stories. I really liked working that way as it gave me more ideas than I would have had otherwise.
I am happy with my end result, because I think it has excitement and the vocabulary is exciting.

What is your favourite thing about literacy?
I like reading better than writing. I like it because I am good at it. I like to read chapter books. I like books about animals. I really like reading ‘Hot Dog 3’. It was really funny and has lots of jokes in it. I like to make people laugh by telling jokes.
When I write I like to write about animals that I think are cute like dogs. I also like to add pictures to my writing.
Tell us about this piece of work…
This is a picture which I used as a plan for my writing about echidnas. The echidna is going up the hill to eat ants.
Brixhibition Results
Last Thursday, we held our Brixhibition Kids Comp. We received 35 entries this year, across grades K-6.
Congratulations to Theo (1-2) who is our overall winner with his ship design Crashing Through the Waves.
Following extremely close behind was Riley (3-4) with his Spiderman themed extravaganza. Only 2% of overall votes separated these two entries.

Congratulations to all students who built and entered their designs. Each student receives a participation certificate.
As well as winning some Tassie Attraction child passes, Theo is now through to the next round of the competition. He will be invited to show his creation at the Launceston Brixhibition Event on the 20th and 21st April at the Door of Hope, competing against students from other schools in the North.
