Dear Families
Welcome to the final edition of the Longford PS newsletter for 2023! This week has been a week of celebration. On Monday we recognised our 2023 award recipients and Year 6s for their achievements. Although the weather wasn’t kind, it really was a special event and wonderful opportunity to gather as a community to celebrate student achievement. Thank you to all those who attended and have supported our school throughout the year. Further down you can find the link to the Presentation Assembly Award Recipients. Well done to all students across our school who have achieved individual growth throughout the year.
For our Year 6s we finished the day gathering for their Celebration Dinner. It was wonderful to see the students really enjoying each and every moment of this event. Students tried new and interesting foods, danced the night away, took funny photos and simply enjoyed each other’s company. The Year 6 families did an amazing job coordinating the event and we are very grateful for their efforts. All of our Year 6s should be extremely proud of their growth and achievement throughout their time at Longford PS. We wish them well for the next chapter of their lives.
I wish you all a happy and safe holiday period and look forward to working in partnership with you again in 2024. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!
Helping Hand Donations
Thank you to families for your generous donations for Helping Hand. Many families in need will benefit from your support.

This week we farewell some of our teachers.
Mrs Jo Brady and Mrs Sue Claridge have supported students in building their reading skills and Mrs Lyndall Jelinek has worked as our teacher librarian. We thank these teachers for the contributions they have made especially around reading in our school.
Miss Maddison Woodberry has obtained a full time position at East Tamar Primary School, Mrs Julia Fletcher will move to Ravenswood Primary School and Mrs Jemma Duncan will be teaching at Perth Primary School. Congratulations to Mrs Katrina Richards, who has won an AST position at Exeter Primary School for 2024. We will miss them here at Longford and wish them all the best at their new schools.
We have received news today that Mrs Carolyn Sutton will be Acting Principal at Invermay Primary School for Terms 1 and 2 2024. We wish Carolyn all the best.
Welcome
We have two new teachers starting with us in 2024. Mr Zach McCullagh, who is a former Longford PS student, will be working on a 5/6 and Mrs Kayla Smith will be part of the 3/4 team. We are looking forward to welcoming them to the Longford PS community.

Thank you to families for supporting our Christmas Raffle, we raised $836. Congratulations to the winners: Dymity Smart, Lauren Pitchford, Harpa Atkinson, David Jack and Lillian Young.
We are very grateful to our community for the support of our Sausage Sizzle at the Carols. JBS for providing 600 sausages and the Longford Fire Brigade for cooking, Banjo's and JJ's for the donation of bread. THANK YOU!!
Earlier this term the 3/4 classes attended an excursion to the Mill Dam, with the support of Landcare Ben and Steve from NRM North. Once we started looking, we realised there were many more weeds present than native plants, with the major problem being the willows. Following our excursion, the students in 3/4 Duncan/Talbot carefully considered the issues and possible solutions, before developing plans to improve the Mill Dam. Each student wrote a letter to share their plan. Many of us chose to send our letter to the Northern Midlands Council or Brian Mitchell (Federal Member for Lyons), or in one case, the King! We also shared these letters with Landcare and NRM North. Landcare were so impressed with our thinking that, when they shared a post on Facebook, they recommended that people should hire students from Longford to do their weed surveys! We are so incredibly proud of the thought, passion and detail we put into our letters. We would love to share some of them with you.
Derby Finals
Last week, we held our STEM UTAS Derby car finals. Class teams competed during STEM lessons to reach the finals. The finals were held in Break 2 of Tuesday, with Traii from 3-4B coming out on top with his 'tall' car design, Adrenaline Junkie. Congratulations to all participants and finalists. See photos below for the finals roster and how they played out, the finals track, the finalists' cars, and a winner's photo of Traii with his trophy printed using our borrowed 3D printer.

On November 24th these students participated in the Schools Triathlon Challenge at Devonport. Some of them did individual events, others worked as a team to complete the swimming, cycling and running legs of the event. They certainly displayed our school attributes of Grit and Health to complete the event.
Well done to all.
Summer holidays are an important time for kids with asthma.
During all the festivities, please don’t forget to keep up your child's asthma management and medicine as prescribed. Good asthma management over the holidays means less time off school when kids return in the new year, and less time off work for you.
To make sure your child stays as healthy as possible over the break and into 2024, you can take the following steps:
- Check your child’s medication to make sure they’re still in date.
- Keep using your child’s preventer medicine as directed over the summer holidays, even if they’re feeling well.
- If you’re leaving the house or going on holiday, make sure you pack your child’s asthma medicine(s) and a spacer.
- Book an Asthma Review with your doctor to get an updated written Asthma Action Plan during the holidays - you'll need this for Term 1 2024. Book in early as doctors can have limited appointments over the Christmas period.
- Use Asthma Australia's School’s Checklist for parents and carers: https://asthma.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/AA_BTS2022_Asthma-Checklist__digital.pdf
