Dear Families
It has been another successful and busy few weeks at Longford Primary School. Our Grade 5/6s had their major excursion to Hollybank. Students from K-6 enjoyed an engaging performance by Terrapin Puppet Theatre Company and all students displayed excellent teamwork and sportsmanship in the 3-6 Swimming Carnival and Infant Fun Day. This Friday a group of students will represent Longford PS at Door of Hope for the Dance Fever Show. These students have been rehearsing for over a term now, to ensure they are ready to perform in front of a large audience. Students in years 3-6 will attend the matinee performance on Friday. We wish our Dance Fever students all the best!
Last week in our school assembly, I spoke about our student attribute Grit from our vision document. This term students across our school have been using the attribute of Grit to achieve great things.
Kinder – Being able to use the monkey bars independently.
Prep – Improving their writing.
1/2 – performing a beautiful song in assembly and at the Town Hall and in assembly.
3/4- Persisting to improve their reading skills and trying their best with their PAT assessments.
5/6- Attempting the ropes course at Tree Top Adventures and performing at Longford’s Got Talent.
Congratulations to all of our students on the way they are challenging themselves!
We have many exciting end of year events coming up including our school Christmas Carols Event on Thursday 14th of December. This is a whole of community event and everyone is welcome. We hope that you can join us to celebrate the year.

Safeguarding Risk Management in Schools
MANAGING SAFEGUARDING RISKS IN OUR SCHOOLS
Our staff play a key role in keeping students safe by proactively monitoring any risks.
The Department for Education, Children and Young People (DECYP) recently released new Safeguarding Risk Management resources for our schools to assist with this.
These resources are designed to help us continuously identify, prevent and reduce risks to students of child abuse and harm, and support our school to be a safe environment where every child and young person can thrive and grow.
During this term we will be developing a Safeguarding Risk Management plan for our school. The plan sets out the risks that we can identify, and most importantly, how we can reduce them.
As parents and carers, you play an important role helping us to identify safeguarding risks in our school, and I’m sure you may also have ideas on how we can reduce these risks to keep students safe.
If you or your child/children have any questions, concerns or wish to report any incidents relating to child abuse or harm, I encourage you to reach out to me or a trusted staff member. We welcome your views and any feedback.
The Tell Someone website is also another useful source of information if you are worried that a child may be at risk of harm or is being sexually abused or groomed.
If you have any concerns, the website gives clear information about what to look for, how to make a report and who to speak to.
For further information on the work being done on safeguarding in our school, please visit DECYP's website.

Grade 5/6 'My Teacher is Going Crazy'
MY TEACHER IS GOING CRAZY
I have no idea why,
I think as I see a pencil zooming by,
She's got 11 'no name' papers (**ahem Finn)
And a squishy that has burst
Jeremy forgot and Lacey keeps claiming Collingwood aren’t the worst,
Lochie locked the door
And Hamish flicked his hair
Jake and Jarrah are calling out and Aidan is swinging on his chair
Harley needs a band aid
My computers almost flat wheres my cable?
Liam and Rhys are drawing
And there are computers are on every table
“Shanna can you help me?”
Can I borrow a red pen?
“Can we go play gaga?”
“What are we doing again?”
My teacher is going crazy
And I have no idea why
Sometimes I cant tell whether she's going to laugh.... or cry
During the Halloween season, the library conducted two competitions for the students to enter. Prizes were spooky themed books (The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman, Howl’s Moving Castle by Dianna Wynne Jones & Coraline by Neil Gaiman)
Year 5/6 were asked to submit a short Halloween story of up 50 words. Our talented winners were: Lailah Robins 5/6B (Evil Donald) and Aimee Morgan 5/6B (Witches and Ghost).Year 3/4 competed in a Halloween drawing competition. Each entrant had to draw and colour a Halloween scene. The lucky winner was: Indianna Tarrant 3/4A.
Congratulations to all our talented winners. We in the library hope you continue to write and draw!!
Name: Chase Sayle
Grade: 1
Class: 1/2 Viney
What is your favourite thing about literacy?
Reading – I like reading because it is fun. I have gotten better at reading because I can now read full words, not just the sounds.
I have been practising my reading with Mrs Viney. She has helped me. She chooses a book and I read it. She will help me when I am stuck on words.
I like writing too. I like to write about my weekends. This is my writing about our walk around Longford. I really had to think about how to spell the words.
Name: Piper Anderson
Grade: 2
Class: 1/2 Jackson/Hughes
What is your favourite thing about literacy?
I like the reading best. I like to read lots of novels. I even had to get rid of some of my picture books to make room for more novels. I did keep my special ones though – like my Eye Spy books and joke books. I love Enola Holmes books too because I like adventure stories.
One of my favourite things about writing is making up stories, but sometimes I put in real things. Once there was a wasp on my BBQ food and I added that into my story, because it made it more realistic.
Name: Malaki Davey
Grade: 5
Class: 5/6Richards
What is your favourite thing about literacy?
Probably reading. I like getting to leave this world and going into a new one. I like the ‘Wings of Fire’ series, because every book is a different perspective. I like fantasy like ‘Lord of The Rings’ which I am currently reading. I am up to the third book. I have always been a reader. I like to read at home, and I will read at any chance I get.
Tell us about this piece of work…
We had to write a persuasive text as if we were campaigning for or against Federation. I chose ‘for’ and I chose to represent Western Australia. We had taken notes through our learning journey about Federation and I saw very strong arguments for WA for Federation. I found the writing of the text easy because I had all my ideas from my notes. I am proud of the standard of this piece of writing. Last year we wrote a journal entry from the perspective of Captain Cook or another made up sailor – I was also very proud of that. I really like writing texts that have a historical perspective.
Longford Garden Show and Christ Church Artwork
Recently our 1/2 students explored our town with a Walking Excursion. Some of their artwork of drawings and watercolour paintings from their excursion were displayed at Christ Church on the weekend. They looked amazing.
Our school student attribute of Creativity was certainly grown with entries in the Longford Spring Flower Show at the Town Hall on the weekend. Thank you to Jan and Deb for working with our students to create their masterpieces. Congratulations to the prize winners: Avery Chugg, Ella Chugg, Ruby Green, Georgia McEldowney, Banjo Terry and Riley Pitchford.
We recently had Sergeant Lynch, one of our local Police Officers come and visit. Sergeant Lynch shared some of the many ways he and his colleagues help keep us safe and spoke to our students about some of the exciting gadgets the Police use to keep us safe. Our Kinder to Grade 2 students also had an opportunity to explore the Police vehicle and enjoyed chatting with Sergeant Lynch. We look forward to visiting the Longford Police Station in 2024 as we continue to build positive relationships with our community.
Thank you to everyone who has brought in bottle caps for our project. We have enough for the project now, but if you would like to keep bringing them in to be upcycled, you are welcome to pass them to Mr Talbot.
Forces
Some of the Grade 1-2 classes have been extending their knowledge about Forces in our STEM Push & Pull lessons. We have learnt about Friction and the different effects materials have on moving objects. We also explored how objects can be moved, such as spun, stretched, pushed, pulled, twisted and tipped. We went out into the playground to see what pushes and pulls we could identify on our equipment. This week we have learned more about Air Resistance and its effects.
QuickDraw
Last week in STEM, Grade 1-4 experimented with Google's machine learning game, QuickDraw. Students draw a picture based on a prompt, and a neural network tries to guess what they’re drawing. The more we play with it, the more it will learn. Feel free to give it a go yourself. Another site we explored was AvaChara (Avatar Creator), which allows creation of an avatar for use with social websites to protect our visual identity. Avatars can be customised, including outfits, backgrounds and objects. They can then be saved as a picture for use on a site instead of photos of ourselves. As with many free websites, there were a lot of advertisements, so we needed to be careful we didn’t accidentally click on any ads which took us away from our creation.
3D Printing
Recently in STEM, the Grade 5-6s have been learning how to use Sway, a Microsoft application as part of student DECYP accounts. The application allows people to make visually striking newsletters, presentations and documentation. There are many styles and ways for the documents to be viewed. Students were tasked with creating a fictional newsletter based on a story, movie, TV show, sport or book.
Meanwhile, our ability to create or modify 3D creations in Tinkercad has improved, with most students now completing a 3D print. We purchased more filament, including Yellow and Green colours. Here are some of the creations, including an example of when things go wrong, or the filament gets very stuck to the base, resulting in a failed print. As the printer cannot print into ‘thin air’, support structures are needed/printed, and then manually removed afterwards with pliers or cutters.
P-4 classes have each had a shared model voted for and printed, and we are hoping for a second print for these classes in the next few weeks.
Over the past two weeks, Grades Prep-2 have been working on their Circle Watercolour art. We first had to draw around circular objects of different sizes with a pencil, ensuring they overlapped with other circles. Then we were able to use our special Watercolour pencils to colour each segment in a different colour, aiming to colour adjacent segments differently. Finally, we applied water using gentle brush strokes in each of the segments. When mixed with the watercolour pencils, this turned it into a paint, and the results as you can see are great! We needed to rinse our brush in between colours, otherwise they would all blend into a grey/brown mess. Well done to all P-2 students for patiently undertaking this task and sticking with it!
