Dear Families
It has been a positive start to Term 4! Students have come back from the holidays ready to learn. Students in Years 3-5 have been undertaking their Swimming and Water Safety program. Their participation and attitude towards this challenge has been excellent and aligns with the LPS student attributes of Health and Grit. We wish these students well for the remainder of their lessons.
Longford Show
I was lucky enough to be able to attend the Longford Show on the weekend. It was wonderful to see many students and community members at the show. The highlight was looking at the amazing art and writing our students had entered in the show. Congratulations to students who represented LPS by entering a piece of work.
PAT Assessments
Over the next few weeks students in P-6 will be completing assessments in Reading and Numeracy. This data gives us valuable information on how our students are progressing in these areas and helps us to plan different ways to support our students progress their Literacy and Numeracy skills. Students will complete the assessments on the computers in their classrooms.
Staffing
LPS are currently working on staffing and class structures for 2024. If your child will be in Kinder next year, please contact the office about enrolment ASAP. If your family are planning on moving to a different school, please let the office know. This enables us to have accurate class numbers for planning. Classes and teachers will not be announced until the last few weeks of term, however I can announce that Mrs Jemma Duncan will be moving to another school in 2024. Mrs Duncan has made many positive contributions to our school and will be missed by staff and students. We wish her all the best for the next chapter in her teaching career.
Candice Burnett
Principal
Welcome back to Term 4! We hope you enjoyed school holidays, and are ready for another exciting term.
We all want the best for our children – for their futures to be as bright as possible. Showing up every day to school really matters. It gives your child every chance to learn, grow and find their interests.
This last stretch of the school year can sometimes be tricky. Keep it up, because each day is another chance to:
- be around friends
- learn new things
- find interests
- create dream futures (whatever that may be!).
If you’re looking for tips on how to create better attendance habits, visit the Anything can happen website.
Please always talk to us if you’re having trouble getting your child to school. We’re here to help.

A reminder that hats are compulsory in Term 4. Wide brim and bucket hats are available from the school office for $10 each. Students not wearing a hat are required to be in the shade at break times.
Mrs Alison Taylor - Prep B
I cannot remember a single night of my life that I have not been immersed in a story. My mother read to me every night and when I began to read chapter books she would read a chapter and I would read a chapter. Because of this I still have to read a book every single night before I go to sleep, no matter how late it is! As a child I loved Enid Blyton stories – especially The Folk of the Faraway tree.
In primary school and high school I adored Judy Blume. Her characters were always self conscious and never seemed to fit in and I could definitely relate to that. Probably some of my favourite stories of all time would have to be Anne of Green Gables and Little Women – again they were full of brave characters who didn’t always do what everyone expected of them.
As an adult I read a huge range of stories, but mostly murder mysteries or historical fiction. I seem to have read a lot of books set in the Second World War. I am always sad about the plight of the Jewish people in Nazi Germany. Because I read so quickly (sometimes I can devour a novel in two days) people suggest I try E-books…..no way! Holding a book and turning the pages is the best thing! I have favourite books I have read more than once…it’s like visiting an old friend to read a beloved book again and again. I have been known to be very sad when I finish reading a book that I have really loved. I have also been known to think about the characters in the book I have been reading as my personal friends and family….and then I remember it’s just a story I’m immersed in!
The Preps have been diving underground with worm expert, Megan Floris. Last Friday they met their very own worm, learnt the power of tunnel building and met ‘Queen Poo’; the world’s best fertiliser. To finish the session a team of Preps cooked up a storm in the outdoor kitchen, making green pancakes to share (recipe below).
We have exciting news from the Longford Rotary Club. They would like to co-fund the installation of a weather shield for our outdoor classroom. This will mean roll-down blinds on the northern side of the shed, making the space more serviceable in wet and windy weather. A big thank you to Longford Rotary!
Thanks also goes out to Mark and Aidan for their continued support in the garden. Their ideas, energy and consistency are the secret to success of our garden program and we cannot thank them enough.
It is wonderful to have so many students being enthusiastic borrowers and exploring the wide variety of fiction and non-fiction books available in the library. Children’s sense of curiosity, developing empathy and love of language are only a few of the positive benefits of being a reader.
We all have some favourite books and characters from childhood and perhaps this short quiz can be shared with the family.
1. Which fictional bear kept a marmalade sandwich under his hat?
a. Rupert b. Paddington c. Winnie the Pooh
2. Which book features Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail?
a. Where the Wild Things Are b. Koala Lou c. The Tale of Peter Rabbit
3. In Aesop’s fable, which animal has a race with a tortoise?
a. Hedgehog b. Hare c. Fox
4. Who wrote The Fantastic Mr Fox?
a. Mem Fox b. Dr Seuss c. Roald Dahl
5. Which best selling series of books Andy Griffith wrote are about what type of structure?
a. Treehouses b. Bridges c. Sheds
Happy Reading!

Bottle Tops Wanted
We would like your bottle tops headed for the bin or recycling! We will up-cycle them into STEM and Art projects this term. Please rinse and bring in plastic milk/water screw-caps (any size) in the school office or to Mr Talbot.
Thank you for your help.
3D Printer
This term, we will be using the 3D printer on loan from Bracknell Primary School. Grade 5-6 students are learning to create 3D models using Tinkercad.com, which also has a ‘Sim Lab’ feature where virtual gravity takes effect. Students can control each 3D object in their design, including width, length, height and position. We plan on having each Grade 5-6 student print a small model of their choice, in either black or white filament. Other classes have the opportunity to vote on a design for the class to be printed one or two items, including pars for a mini bicycle, a mini maze game and a train engine model.
Pom-Pom Shooters
This week, Grade 1-2 classes had the opportunity to create pom-pom shooters out of paper cups and balloon ends. We needed to cut out the base of the cup, tie a knot in the balloon and stick the end over the cup, secure with tape, and decorate. Mini targets were set up around the room for students to be able to shoot small bits of paper, cotton buds or pom-poms at the mini targets.

Slime and Playdoh
Last week in STEM, Prep classes explored textures and stretchiness with slime, goo and playdoh.
All children in Tasmania have a right to be known, safe, well and learning. We are highly committed to the safety of all students at our school. Earlier this month, DECYP launched the Tell Someone initiative, to raise awareness in the community about child sexual abuse and grooming.
The Tell Someone website gives children and young people clear advice on what to do in situations where they feel worried, unsafe or unsure. It also gives adults advice and support on how to respond if they suspect or know a child is being groomed or sexually abused or is at risk of harm.
Please visit the website, read the information, and try to find a suitable time to talk with your children about this issue and the resources available. It’s important that you both understand the possible signs of sexual abuse or grooming behaviour, and how to stay safe online and offline.
If reading this information has caused you distress, please visit DECYP’s website for a list of support services.
Please contact the school if you have any questions about this information.
