Dear Families
It was wonderful to have the opportunity to share and celebrate student growth and achievement at our recent learning conversations. Thank you for making the time to attend, we really value your insight and support during these conversations.
This week marks the end of the Premier’s Reading Challenge. It has been fantastic to see students so engaged and excited about reading. Reading is one of our school priorities and we know that regular reading time increases students’ vocabulary, fluency and academic achievement. To acknowledge the awesome effort students have put into their reading this term, classes will be having a celebration event later in the week.
Next term students in Prep to Year Six will be undertaking PAT testing. These assessments will provide information on how our students are progressing in Reading and Numeracy. We will use the data to inform learning supports and opportunities for students for the rest of the year and 2024. I will provide further information on PAT later next term.
Over the past few weeks, we have had many students represent our school. Students in Singfest worked together with students from other schools to put on a beautiful performance. Students in upper primary had the opportunity to represent Longford in Hockey, Soccer, Football and Netball. These students will take part in the Country Gold Carnival on Thursday. Congratulations to students involved in Singfest and Country Gold.
I wish everyone a happy end to the Term and hope that you have the opportunity to have some quality family time over the break.

What is your favourite thing about literacy?
When I read and write I feel happy. I have liked reading and writing since Kinder. My favourite would be reading. I like to read books that are about adventures like ‘BeastQuest’ (I got that as an award last year). When I borrow from the library I like good details and illustrations. I like to read on my bed in my room or outside – near my old dog, Tonka’s, grave.
I like to write adventure stories (like what I read). I prefer writing stories, to other types of texts.
Tell me about this piece of work
It is like an adventure story and it has a villain and different characters. I like this story because I feel like I am actually in the story when I read it. I am entering the story in the show. The title is ‘The Death House’. I started by writing an opening paragrpah, then came up with the title – I can find it hard to come up with a title. I think this is a 9.9/10 for me as a writer.

Reading has always been one of my favourite things to do and has been since I was a little girl. I can still get so immersed in a book that you could say something to me and I wouldn’t hear you!
As a very little person, I had heaps of golden books. My favourite was one called I like Kindergarten. I still have this book, although it is very loved now. Probably from sleeping with it under my pillow my Mum tells me. It really is no surprise I became an Early Childhood Teacher.
As I grew up I remember loving the Babysitter Club books. I find it so lovely that a few of the girls in my class are reading these now. Throughout high school I was very much into the Tomorrow When the War Began Series by John Marsden.
My love of books led me to work at Stories Bookshop for almost 5 years. During my time here I got to order the books for the store and run the excursion groups. Reading to the class groups on their excursion was one of my favourite things to do. Working at the bookshop allowed me to meet so many authors including my favourite picture book author Bob Graham. I own a few books that he signed for me which is just so special.
These days I enjoy reading realistic fiction and my favourite author is Jodi Picoult. I have read so many of her books now though that I can guess the endings! I am currently reading Boy Swallows Universe by Trent Dalton and am loving it.
I get to choose the next Celebrity Reader, so watch this space!
