Book Week
Last week our school community celebrated Book Week. Students read the books short listed for the Children’s Book Council of Australia Awards and classes responded to these in a variety of ways. Our Book Week Parade was extremely well supported and it was wonderful to see the number of students and staff who dressed as their favourite book characters. Thank you to all who participated in recognising and celebrating the value of reading at our school. Our Book Week celebrations included the beautiful 'Book Forest' created by our Literacy Team and a visit from author Sally Sutton. Our Reading Ambassadors shared some fantastic books with classes and in break times over the week. Congratulations to all involved.
Classes 2020
The Leadership Team have started to look at class configurations for 2020. To accurately complete this exercise, we ask that you contact the school office if your child will not be attending Longford in 2020. If you know of any families with K-6 students who are moving into the area could you please also notify the school.

School Association
What is a School Association?
The School Association is made up of parents, staff and community members of a school. The School Association is an important part of the school, working with the Principal to achieve shared outcomes for learners attending our school and for the benefit of the whole school community. Membership of the School Association provides a forum for the sharing of knowledge and skills. The purpose of the School Association is to provide members with a way to participate and support the school.
The School Association Committee is an elected group of representatives. Our 2019 School Association Committee consists of:
Carolyn Sutton, Leith McEldowney, Alison Morgan, Judelle Parker, Margaret Allen, Bethany Chugg, Cathy Cloudsdale, Jacinta Doran, Selena Howard and Elise Rockliffe.
Parent Fundraising Group (PFG)
What is the PFG?
The Parent Fundraising Group is a subcommittee of the School Association. The PFG is a fundraising group of non-elected members from our School Community. The purpose of this group is to plan and manage the fundraising efforts of our school. All fundraising money from the PFG is forwarded to the Association to purchase items for our school. If you would like to be included in the PFG (however, big or small), please contact Judelle Parker.
The PFG subcommittee chairperson must be a member of the School Association Committee. As we grow the PFG, Judelle Parker will chair the subcommittee for 2019.

A Winter's Harvest
Nori and a team of 5/6 students recently participated in a mass garden harvest. They wanted to
- fill a harvest basket for the 1 Roberts class to share, and
- clear a bed for planting broad beans
The 2/3/4 Bright Spark students followed from their work, creating bundles of silverbeet, bags of coriander and wedges of pumpkin. With a bursting basket in hand we visited the 1 Roberts class, and were warmly welcomed! Every student had a chance to take something home.
Last Friday, Bright Spark students set about tasting the garden greens themselves by making green pasta. Three teams set to work in the kitchen, rolling and cutting the dough. Thanks to the help of Nina, Ali and Aidan, the students made fettuccini in excellent time. We sat beneath the oak trees to share the garden spoils, quietly consuming 1.2kg of silverbeet.

Book Week was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate all the ways we embrace reading at Longford Primary School. Students were immersed in meaningful learning experiences during the week, including Read Alouds from our Grade 5/6 Reading Ambassadors, along with classroom activities that focused on reading strategies through the use of favourite books and authors.
Our Book Week Parade was a success and students were given the opportunity to dress up as characters from their favourite books. Staff also shared their secret powers that reading gives them with the community.
Our week culminated in two 'Reading Forests' popping up in our school. Students embraced the opportunity to share books with class mates, buddy classes and friends throughout the day.
On Friday we were very fortunate to have a visit from New Zealand author Sally Sutton. Sally is a children’s book author and she shared many of her wonderful picture books along with her short chapter books. She ran two sessions with our students where she shared her experiences of writing books and students were given practical tips and ideas for writing their own stories.
Mr Nobes was interviewed by Reading Ambassador, Imogen.
Title: The Very Cranky Bear
Author: Nick Bland
Can you tell us a little bit about the book? It is about four animals that live in the jungle trying to cheer up the bear so they can get out of the rain.
Why is it your favourite? I like the rhyming throughout the book and I also like that the hero is not a predictable character.
Who would you recommend this book to? 2-12 years of age, because of the pictures.
Sounds like a great book, if you haven’t read it we have a copy in our school library!
Would you like to know more about how you can assist your children with reading at home? Join us for a cuppa and a chat about useful ways to help engage and support your child’s reading development.
