Dear Students and Families
Primary Athletics Carnival
Congratulations to all participants in our recently run Athletic Carnival. Congratulations to the winning house Norfolk.
The events were challenging and fun and allowed for every student to participate to the best of their ability. I was delighted to hear of students supporting their peers with encouraging words and actions. Our House Leaders were outstanding in their support of Mr Tantari across all events. I congratulate and thank each House Leader for your organisational input and for the support you offered your peers and teachers. Thanks to everyone who helped contribute to the successful running of the Carnival. A big thanks to Mr Tantari for his organisation and management of the event and Judelle Parker and her helpers for organising the baking and sales of all food items. Thank you to all the staff who contributed to the ‘behind the scenes work’ before, during and after the event. We sincerely appreciate the family and friend cheer squads for helping to support every student who participated.
The Early Years Athletics Carnival is scheduled for the 19th of March and will be held on the school oval – all welcome.
RRR Update
Thank you for the overwhelming support from families in regard to our strengthened RRR process. We appreciate that families are returning notes, contacting us for clarification and talking with staff around individual behaviour plans. Already this year, we have seen a significant decrease in the severity and frequency of inappropriate behaviours. Senior Staff are always available to chat, please don’t hesitate to talk with us if you have any questions, queries or concerns in relation to the RRR process.
Quadrangle Redevelopment
We are excited that we can start planning our Quadrangle Redevelopment Project. If you are interested in joining an ‘Ideas Committee’ to have your say and help plan our direction forward, please come along to a meeting in the Staff Room on Monday the 16th of March at 9:15am – everyone welcome!
Open Classrooms & Community BBQ
Thank you to everyone who attended our Welcome BBQ and open classroom afternoon. Thank you to Mr Roberts for cooking the sausages for us to enjoy and thank you to JB Swift and JJs for their sponsorship.
Validation Forms
Validation Forms are now overdue. Please return forms as matter of importance as soon as you can. If you require assistance in completing the form, please speak to Maree in the office.
Road Safety
Crossings must be used when coming to and from school. Sadly, we have had an incident involving a student being hit by a car recently that could have been very serious. We continue to have many reports of near misses. We urge all students to ride responsibly and always wear helmets when travelling on bikes and scooters. RACT will run a road safety session with our upper primary students later in Term 1.
Grade 6 Camp
Our Grade 6 students will leave for camp on Monday the 23rd of March, returning by 2:50pm on Tuesday the 24th of March.
Launching into Learning
Don’t forget to join our Longford Primary School LiL Facebook page or pick up a brochure of Term 1 Programs from the office!
Please remember that the school learning day starts at 9:00am and concludes at 2:50pm. Supervision is available from 8:30am. We ask that students only use the grounds and equipment outside of school hours when parental supervision can be provided. Please contact the school if you are unable to collect children on time as we have limited supervision available from 3:00pm.
National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence
Friday the 20th of March is National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. In the lead up to this day, students will spend time ‘unpacking’ the term bullying in their classrooms. Teachers will be sharing and discussing strategies with students that may help to resolve conflict.
If your child talks to you about bullying:
- Listen calmly and get the full story
- Reassure your child that they are not to blame
- Ask your child what they want to do about it and how you can help
- Visit bullyingnoway.gov.au to find some strategies
- Contact the school
- Check in regularly with your child

The 2020 Longford Primary Athletics Carnival was held on Friday 6th March at the Longford Football Ground. Students from Grades 3 to 6 took part in the carnival and it was a pleasure to observe the way our students competed on the day and the sportsmanship they showed towards one another. There were some great individual and team efforts, but above all, the students had fun and represented their houses with pride. It was one of the closest carnivals in recent history, with Norfolk victorious over Latour by just 18 points; 900 points to 882. The final race of the day was a relay with teams made up from staff, parents and former Longford students from KMHS, with the parents impressing all with their speed. Thank you to the following people for making the carnival possible: Mr Roberts for the setup and organisation of equipment; Miss Doran for her commentary of events; Mrs Denne for preparing the program; Judelle Parker and the PFG for operating the kiosk; KMHS students Lucy, Kaitlyn and Georgia for their assistance with judging and marshalling; and Mrs Lockhart, Marg Allen and Ween Howard for their work recording the carnival’s results.

Please ensure students have sunscreen applied before coming to school on the day of their athletic carnivals. Extra sunscreen will be available and students will be reminded at regular intervals to reapply this.

Pencils for Smiles
At the end of Term 4 in December 2019, students of Longford Primary School donated pencils and crayons to Longford Rotary to be distributed to school in developing countries under the ‘Pencils for Smiles’ project.
Longford Rotary member James Wilcox visited Nepal in February and took with him 15 kilograms of donated pencils and crayons.
The pencils and crayons were organised into packs and were distributed to the following locations:
- Nepal Prerana Samaj orphanage in Kathmandu
- Suryodaya Higher Secondary School, Sarikhet
- Schools in the Waling Municipality
Students from the orphanage and the schools were very happy to receive the pencils and crayons and sent their sincere appreciation to the students of Longford Primary School.
Dear Parents/Guardians
Longford Primary School cares about the safety and well-being of all of our students. Many of you will know someone who is affected by anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic reaction.
Our school does its best to be an allergy aware school. Staff have had training in severe allergy management and will be updating this training soon. We have implemented strategies to help keep students at risk of anaphylaxis as safe as we can.
We have a student at our school who lives with the risk of anaphylaxis to nuts. We ask that you help us educate your child on the importance of:
- Not sharing food with others
- Washing hands after eating
- Seeking out an adult if they think their friend with allergies is sick.
Please consider the children with food allergy when packing your child’s lunch or when sending in food for any occasion, including school excursions.
Class groups that have students with a severe food allergy may receive a class note asking parents to not send in food options that contain nuts as young children can be messy eaters and not contain their food. Children will be asked to wash their hands regularly.
We thank you for your cooperation in keeping our students with allergies safe at school.
Please look out for an upcoming anaphylaxis information training session in which all members of our school community will be welcome to attend
