Dear Students and Families,
We have had a fantastic start to the year and already we are seeing some incredible work and academic growth occurring in all classrooms. Our Kindergarten students have joined our learning community seamlessly – and although they are tired they have impressed us with their genuine desire to learn, play and make new friends. Thank you to families that continue to provide us with positive and constructive feedback to ensure the way we work together is genuinely in partnership.
RRR Update
Staff have recently reviewed our behaviour processes and policies. We will continue to share information with families on these updates in order to keep everyone informed and up to date. RRR stands for ‘Reflect, Repair and Restore’. If a student engages in unsafe or disrespectful behaviour they will be asked to attend a RRR session with a member of Senior Staff during their playtime. During this time, staff will work with the student on a reflective exercise and coach/support the student with ways to repair and rebuild and when necessary restore relationships. A letter to families will be sent out each time a student participates in a RRR session. We keep detailed notes of the incident that occurred and will happily share these notes with parents at your request. If a student continues to engage in unsafe/disrespectful behaviour a parent/teacher meeting will be organised to create a support plan for the student. We appreciate families signing the letter and returning to school the following day to acknowledge the incident has been discussed.
Senior Staff are available to chat, please don’t hesitate to talk with us if you have any questions, queries or concerns in relation to the RRR process.
Quadrangle Redevelopment
We are excited that we can start planning our Quadrangle Redevelopment Project. If you are interested in joining an ‘Ideas Committee’ to have your say and help plan our direction forward, please come along to a meeting in the Staff Room on Monday the 16th of March at 9:15am.
Our Value of Respect
Our School focus for Term 1 is the value of RESPECT. Students are currently working on what this ‘Looks Like’ and ‘Sounds Like’ at our School. At the end of the term we will celebrate our ‘Values Champions’ at a Principal hosted morning tea.
Student Leadership 2020
Congratulations to the 15 students who recently attended the GRIP Leadership Conference at the Tailrace Centre Riverside with Miss Doran. This was a fantastic opportunity for students to learn explicit leadership skills. We are really proud of our School Leaders as they set a fantastic example with their behaviour, work ethic, and respect shown to all members of our school community! See a report and photo further in the newsletter.
Leadership Roles 2020
I sincerely congratulate all of the senior students that have applied for a school leadership role or roles over recent weeks. Leadership applications have been engaging, personalised and presented with maturity and pride. The overall standard of application has been outstanding. Congratulations Leaders – we can’t wait to see the initiatives you lead in 2020!
We will recognise our leaders at the assembly on the 3rd of March from 2:00pm.

Validation Forms
Validation Forms are now overdue. Please return forms as matter of importance as soon as you can. If you require assistance in completing the form, please speak to Maree in the office.
Road Safety
Crossings must be used when coming to and from school. Sadly, we have had an incident involving a student being hit by a car recently that could have been very serious. We continue to have many reports of near misses. We urge all student to ride responsibly and always wear helmets when travelling on bikes and scooters. RACT will run a road safety session with our upper primary students later in Term 1.
Grade 6 Camp
Camp organisation is now well under way! If you would like to discuss any specific requirements in relation to your child and camp, please contact the class teacher as a matter of importance.
Launching into Learning
Thank you Clare
Last week we farewelled Clare Corban-Banks after six years of volunteering at our school in Breakfast Club, as part of our MATES program and our Chaplaincy Committee. Thank you Clare for your commitment to our school, you will be missed.
Duty of Care and School Hours
Please remember that the school learning day starts at 9:00am and concludes at 2:50pm. Supervision is available from 8:30am. We ask that students only use the grounds and equipment outside of school hours when parental supervision can be provided.
Dogs on School Grounds
Please ensure if you have a dog on school grounds that you sit away from walkways and undercover areas. Dogs must be on a short lead to avoid potential tripping hazards. We do have students with dog allergies, so we ask families to be mindful of this.
Cup Day Public Holiday
Just a reminder that Wednesday the 26th of February (tomorrow) is the Launceston Cup and a public holiday for all students.
Student Wellbeing Survey
Attention: Parents and Carers of students in Years 4-6
The wellbeing of our students is important to us. To get an understanding of how students across Tasmania feel about their own wellbeing, students in Years 4-6 at Longford Primary School will be taking part in a wellbeing survey. The Student Wellbeing Survey is part of the Department of Education’s Child and Student Wellbeing Strategy.
The details for the survey are:
When: Between the 16th – 20th March
Who: Grade 4-6
What do I need to do: You and your child do not need to do anything. The survey will be done in class time and will not require your child to prepare in any way.
A letter with more information will be sent home with all Years 4-6 students, including Frequently Asked Questions and a form to sign and return to the school if you do not want your child to participate in the survey.
If you would like further information, please contact Carolyn Sutton or Jacinta Doran.
Thank you for supporting us to ensure that all our learners are safe, feel supported and are able to flourish, so they can engage in learning.
Medical Action Plans
Our School Nurse Chanelle McCormack is currently contacting families to ensure we have all of our medical records up to date. Asthma Medical Forms will come home with students over coming weeks to be updated.

On the 17th of February, 15 students from Longford primary went to the GRIP leadership, held at the Tailrace Centre at Riverside. The Friday before the GRIP leadership, all 15 students came and chose their jackets to represent our school. On Monday went on a small white bus at 8:30 on the dot. So we left to go to the Tailrace centre and arrived there at 9:10am. There must have been at least 400 people there!
At 9:15am we started the conference. At first there was a man named Rodney. He told us that today we would have three different sessions. Then Rodney told us that the next performance would need us to be as loud as possible, even if you don’t normally make loud noises. Then two people named Sam and Caleb who called themselves the loud noise boys and they were really funny, fun and had a lot of jokes for everyone there. Then a lady named Marney gave us an activity which we were showed movie clips and then we would have to write down how they showed leadership. That activity was fun! Then it was time for recess. All of Longford primary enjoyed eating their recess and talking to their friends about how fun it was. Then at 11:10am we started session two. We opened up the booklets that we got at the start. We had to write down what we learned in session one is how to be a good leader and that you don’t need a badge or roll to lead the way. Then we had Loud Noise Boys again. That was fun! Then we had Marney again. So fun! At 12:30pm we had lunch. Enjoying our Yummy Lunches we talked about what we had learned. Then at 1:00pm we started the final session. We watched a clip about leadership and the actors were the presenters! After the clip Rodney talked to us again. Then loud noise boys did the last performance but we couldn’t see it because we had to leave to catch our little bus again. We had fun and we hope that we can go again one day. It was SO fun and we learned lots about being a great, respectful leader!!
A special thanks to Catherine, who gave up her time to help on the day. Thank You Catherine!

Grade 3-6 Athletic Carnival
The Primary Athletic Carnival is being held on Friday 5th March at the Longford Football Ground. Parents are most welcome as spectators. Students will be under gazebos on the track and parents may either sit around the outside of the oval, in the grandstands or bring a chair to sit on the opposite side of the track to the students. Students need permission from their class teacher before they are allowed to visit spectators. If your child is unable to compete in the carnival could you please provide a note or explanation.
