Dear Families
Dad’s Night & Open Classrooms
Dad’s Night was a huge success, and it was wonderful to see so many families attend the event. We truly value the opportunity to connect with families through these gatherings. Next week, we will be holding Open Classrooms, where your child/children will share their learning with you, and teachers will be available to discuss any questions or concerns. Details about the Open Classrooms are further down in the newsletter. We look forward to seeing you next week.
Reading Volunteers
Starting next term, we will run a Reading Club before school and are looking for volunteers from 8:30-9:00 to assist with the program. If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a reading volunteer, please contact the school office.
Student Wellbeing for Learning
Student wellbeing is a key priority for our school. When students are well, they learn more effectively. Recently, students in Years 4-6 completed the Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey, and staff will use this information to implement wellbeing supports. One crucial aspect of wellbeing is sleep. Quality sleep is essential for your child’s learning and overall well-being, aiding in information retention, focus, and emotional balance. Please support good sleep habits at home to help your child thrive academically and personally.

Families Satisfaction Survey 2024
We would be grateful if you completed our online survey about Longford Primary School. Your feedback is very important to help us inform our
school-planning and decision-making.
The school satisfaction survey is open until Friday 20 September 2024 and should take about 5 minutes to complete.
Each family should nominate one person to fill in this survey for their child(ren).
Take the online survey by clicking this Link, or pasting it in your browser: https://nam.dcv.ms/dIozpylXyC
The survey is carried out on a secure website and all responses are anonymous and confidential.
All families in this school received the same survey link and no identifying information is collected. A summary of the survey results will be provided to schools. Responses from individuals or small groups will NOT be disclosed to any Department for Education, Children and Young People staff. Please contact your school if you require any assistance.
Thank you for taking the time to fill in this survey.
We look forward to welcoming families to our Open Afternoons on Tuesday September 17th (3:00-4:30pm) and Thursday September 19th (3:00-6:00pm).
These Open Afternoons are less formal than the Learning Conversations that were held earlier this year. They will be a wonderful opportunity for your child to showcase their work and accomplishments to you. It will also provide a chance for you to touch base with their teachers, gain insight into their learning experiences and discuss any questions. Teachers will be sharing Evidence of Learning in Science, as well as overall learning growth.
Members of the Leadership team and Student Support (Hub) staff will also be available for a conversation at these times.
Letters have been sent home this week for you to indicate the afternoon you intend to attend on the return slip.
Grade 1/2 Viney and 3/4 Freeman/Talbot talked about remembering. They made a Memory game with their buddies.
In our library lessons, teachers have been reading short listed new books from the Childrens Book Council of Australia. Last Thursday children voted for their favourite book. ‘Every Night at Midnight' received 68 votes and 'That Bird Has Arms’ received 30 votes.
Three lucky students were drawn from the votes and they got to choose a book for their prize.

What is your favourite thing about literacy?
I really love both reading and writing. It is hard to pick which is my favourite as they are both so great. What I like about reading is that you forget everything else and get sucked into the book – it gives you a whole new world. I like lots of different books, but read ‘The Ella Diaries’ and ‘Harry Potter’ a lot.
With writing, I love making up stories and writing poems. I have only just started writing poems and I really enjoy it so far. I am in the middle of writing a story called ‘Stinky the Skunk’. It is a story about a skunk who is trying to find mould, but creates lots of chaos on the way.
Tell us about this piece of work…
We had to think about sounds that we like and list them. I decided to put them into a poem. I made a pattern where two rows rhyme, then the third doesn’t then 2 rhyme again and the next doesn’t – like a pattern. When I had finished it, I decided that I wanted to add more to the ending, so I did.
I feel really excited to be a Literacy Legend because I really love literacy. I feel proud that my work was noticed.
Arts - Weaving
Recently in STEM, some groups have been enjoying wool weaving, creating 'Tiger's Eye' and French knitting creations. Ruby from 3/4B took up the challenge to create an extra long creation of her French knitting.
HASS
1/2B have been exploring 'then and now', with a focus on communications technology. We have looked at the changing technology over time, including how messages used to be conveyed through to the invention of the first telephone. A STEM experiment recently included making cup/string telephones and trying these outside with a partner.
Rubber-band Powered Cars
5/6s have recently been creating rubber-band powered cars. To increase friction, weights were needed to be added, and tape/rubber on the wheels.
Congratulations to our students selected to represent the Northern Midlands Primary Schools at the Country Gold carnivals next week.

On Wednesday 25th of September we will be holding our ECE Cross Country Carnival. This year, the Aussie Sports Leaders are planning the event. They have designed the course to have lots of obstacles to test our young runners. We invite families to come and support our K-2 students on the day.
The event will start at 1:40pm and conclude around 2:50pm on the school oval. Times for each grade group are below. For safety and in line with our DECYP policies we ask that families stay in the designated viewing areas and avoid approaching students.
We are also seeking donations for extra obstacle equipment such as bailing twine, hay bales etc. All donated equipment can be salvaged provided it’s still in good working order after the event. If you can assist with donations, please contact the school or email Mr Ellis at daniel.ellis@decyp.tas.gov.au
Times of events:
1:30 – students gather on oval
1:40 - Prep
1:55 – Kinder
2:10 – Grade 1
2:25 – Grade 2
