Dear Families
Students have returned with energy and enthusiasm for learning. Across the school students have continued to focus on improving their reading skills. We have been so impressed with the growth that some students are displaying with their reading. We have also had students now reach 150 nights in the reading challenge. This is an amazing achievement. Thank you to families for the support you are giving your child with their reading at home.
This term we are providing a variety of extracurricular activities for students. Some of the activities include Dance Fever, Garden Program, Country Gold Sport and Taiko drumming. We look forward to sharing updates about these programs throughout the term.
This week we launched our LiL babies sessions. These sessions will be held on Wednesdays in the library. For more information, please contact Jane or Ruth via the school.
Last week we had some special guests from the council visit our Year 3/4s to talk about their upcoming excursion to the Mill Dam. You can read more about the visit further down in the newsletter. Thank you to Northern Midlands Council for supporting this learning experience.

Congratulations to students for receiving a Responsibility Certificate of Merit
Preparing for Tree Day
Last week, Longford Primary had a visit from the Northern Midlands Mayor, Mary Knowles and Councillor, Alison Andrews. Grade 3/4 and Grade 2 Berry students were addressed.
Mayor Knowles talked about the beautiful Fingal valley she calls home and how important native trees are to her. She thanked the grade 4 students for writing to the Council about their ideas and concerns for Mill Dam.
Mayor Knowles remembered the earlier work of Longford Primary's 2022 Environmental Warriors (Liam, Ethan, Levi, Aimee, Lacey, Lacey, Jacob and Aidan) who worked to 'Celebrate & Protect Lutha/Trees'.
Mayor Knowles wanted students to know that if they consider a tree to be significant to our community, they can apply for that tree to be added to the Council's Significant Tree Register. This involves 4 steps:
a. Take a photo of the tree
b. Write down the location of the tree
c. Say why the tree is significant
d. Submit Application: mary.knowles@nmc.tas.gov.au
Councillor Andrews named Chloe, Charlotte, Rhylee, Theo and Jason in her speech and quoted the letters they wrote to Council. According to Councillor Andrews, all the letters were highly influential and have brought the School and Council together in partnership.
Councillor Andrews and Mayor Knowles told us about the special day of planting this Thursday at the Mill Dam, Stokes Park and Cairns Park (near the boat ramp). The Works Manager, Leigh McCullagh and his team have been busy prepared the planting sites.
Tasmanian Blackwood and White Gum are some of the tree species being planted - as requested by students! Well done student advocates and the fabulous teachers supporting their big ideas.
Many thanks to the Mayor, Councillor Andrews and Vivien Tan for fostering this vibrant partnership with Longford Primary.
Library competition winners were awarded a book for returning their library books regularly. Congratulations Bianca, Claudia, Piper and Makyhia.
The 5/6 classes became chalk Olympians by drawing their favourite sport with chalk and then posing for a photo with Mr Laskey’s drone!
Our Fowl Friends for this term are Dallas, Tristan, Grace, Rhylee and Makyhia. Thank you for caring for our school poultry.
