Dear Families
As I reflect back on the term, I am extremely proud of the way our students at Longford Primary have embraced new challenges and learning opportunities. Students have participated in a range of activities including, The Reading Challenge, Illuminate, Cross Country, Garden Program and excursions. We have also enjoyed welcoming families into the school through events such as Mother’s Day Breakfast, Learning Conversations and the Winter Celebration. We thank our families for their ongoing support and engagement at Longford PS.
NAIDOC Week
This year NAIDOC week is held during the holidays from 7th-14th July. As part of our school NAIDOC program students have been engaging in learning around culture and traditions. This learning will continue into early next term. As part of our Garden program students in 3/4 had a visit from Tenagi Brown, Aboriginal Fire Officer with Parks and Wildlife. Students learnt about cultural burning and role of fire for caring for country. You can see photos further down in the newsletter.
Reading Focus
We are now half way through the year and have made some excellent progress in our Reading Priority. Staff have been undergoing professional learning on the teaching of reading and we have increased support for students in this area. This week some students will reach 150 nights of reading. That is an amazing achievement! We encourage all our students to keep reading with their families over the holidays.
I hope you and your family enjoy the term break and we look forward to welcoming our students back on the 22nd of July for Term 3.

Congratulations to students for receiving a Respect Certificate of Merit
After a full term of storytelling, we were delighted to welcome Teangi Brown from Parks and Wildlife (Aboriginal Fire Officer) to the final 3/4 garden session on Friday. He taught us about cool fires and how cool burning keeps our native plants and animals healthy. He told us stories about First Nations people and culture. Afterwards, we ate food together that had been cooked on the fire.
Thanks to Megs, Aidan and Mark for their work in making this celebration happen.

Prep - Milo's Birthday Surprise
As part of our phonics instruction, students have been introduced to characters from a story called Milo's Birthday Surprise. In the story, Milo (the main character) invites all his friends to his birthday party. Each character corresponds to the sounds of the letters such as Sally the Snake for the letter 's'.
In each letter teaching session, our Prep students help Milo call another friend to invite - but each time they don't answer because they are all actually busy planning a surprise party for Milo!
Our Prep students have come to the end of the story, having met all of Milo's friends and therefore being introduced to the initial sounds of the alphabet. To recognise this achievement, our students celebrated with Milo Monkey! Students dressed up as one of Milo's friends.
Last week our Prep-6 classes attended presentations about hydropower in Tasmania. Thank you Susan from Hydro Tasmania for facilitiating this education program at our school.
Paper Craft
This week, Preps and 3/4s have had the opportunity to create some paper crafts, including puppets, flower folding and 'twirlers'. Students followed procedural instructions, used their fine motor skills in cutting and bumped up their constructions through decorating.
